Alternatives to Guardianship and Other Post-Secondary Decisions & Resources for Parents

When students with disabilities turn 18, families often think getting guardianship over a student is their only option. But guardianship strips a person of most of their rights, including the right to vote, drive, get married, and more. There are alternatives to guardianship, including supported decision making, that allow a young person with a disability to maintain her rights and make choices with the help of someone she knows and trusts.

“Alternatives to Guardianship” presented by Colleen Elbe, Supervising Attorney with Disability Rights Texas, will provide FREE information for families on options after a child with a disability turns 18.
