Hands On Mathematics with Manipulatives for Secondary Teachers - Lubbock Cooper

Going from Concrete to Abstract

Teachers will work with manipulatives such as algebra tiles and patty paper and use motion detectors and temperature probes to engage students in secondary mathematics. Teachers will look at many different ways to incorporate the use of manipulatives into their classrooms. This training will focus on the concrete objects that are written into our state standards, many teachers caution from using manipulatives in their classrooms because of lack of knowledge or lack of time. We will discuss why it is important to take the time to learn how to use both concrete and representational objects and ideas to develop lasting math concepts.
