Active Learning Approach for Students with Significant Disabilities
Active Learning for Educating Students of Any Age with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD)



Active Learning is a whole-person, multi-sensory approach of instruction for students of any age with significant disabilities, including sensory impairments, and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).  Based on the work of DrLilli Nielsen of Denmark who shared with the world an Active Learning approach in educating individuals who are developmentally delayed.

Important Session Information:


This session provides a 101 on Active Learning, based on the work of Dr. Lili Nielsen.  The presenter is from Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin..... but this session is not just for educators of students with visual impairment.  This session is especially for the educator who works with all students in the self-contained/functional classroom.  Active Learning is the research-based, best-practice approach for instructing students who have visual impairment, multiple disabilities with visual impairment, and other low-incidence disabilities.  Attendees will participate in a review of Active Learning principles, the importance of purposeful play, general guidelines for selecting materials and equipment, useful forms for planning, and more.
