Transforming School Climate with Conscious Discipline

Objectives
As a result of training educators will be able to:
• Recognize the relationship of internal states to behavior for both adults and
students. Utilizing the Conscious Discipline Brain State Model participants will role
play examples of teacher behaviors to match the skill set for each brain state and
discuss strategies for supporting student’s social and emotional development in
positive ways.
• Understand the need to shift from obedience to self-regulation. Former gang
leader turned high school graduate, DJ Batiste, provides an inspirational talk on his
school experiences related to discipline and being removed from class, put in
alternative schools, and suspensions from school.
• Describe how to use the School Family™ as the basis for classroom management
and helping meet the social-emotional needs of all children. Through group
discussion, interactive activities, and real classroom video examples educators will
be able to create opportunities for connections and school family building for
middle and high school students. Understand the importance of connecting
disconnected children to the school family for their success and improved
classroom climate.
