Teaching about character traits in reading can be challenging but fun! How do we foster an “attitude of gratitude” in our students? How can we create an awareness of how the simple gifts of our time and friendship, our talents, and a generous spirit can make a difference? One of the hardest parts for kids, is that in most pieces of literature, the character traits are somewhat abstract. Books can provide a springboard for discussions and lessons about characters and an attempt to instill those same traits in our students. Teachers can use mentor texts to teach character education such as: generosity, friendship, benevolence, compassion, service, and kindness. In this session you will learn how to incorporate teaching character into your read alouds.
This session will address effective approaches and methodologies for special populations such as the English Language Learner (ELL) in order to improve English language proficiency and academic achievement.
