Comprehensive Cohort: Modules 1-6



Reading Instruction

Important Session Information:


The HB3 Texas Reading Academies offer invaluable knowledge and strategies to empower educators in their journey to unlock the potential of every student through the power of literacy. Throughout each of the 12 modules, participants will engage in hands-on activities, collaborative discussions, and reflective exercises.

Day One - Modules 1-3

  • Identify the purpose, vision, and mission of the Texas Reading Academies.
  • Discuss the impact of evidence-based research on students' literacy development.
  • Examine the principles of explicit and systematic literacy based instruction. 
  • Reflect upon how educators can build and sustain a literacy community. 

Day Two - Module 4

  • Analyze the purpose, characteristics, and uses of various literacy assessment tools.
  • Use the Assessment-Instructional Cycle to inform instructional decisions. 
  • Identify characteristics and instructional supports for diverse learners. 


Day Three - Module 5

  • Explain the connection between oral language and vocabulary within students' literacy development.
  • Analyze effective instructional strategies for developing all students' oral language and vocabulary. 
  • Use assessment data to make instructional decisions that support oral language and vocabulary development.

Day Four - Module 6 

  • Explain the importance of phonological awareness instruction for developing readers.
  • Describe the continuum of skills that fall under the phonological-awareness umbrella and explain how these skills are taught and scaffolded through systematic and explicit instruction. 
  • Review phonological awareness assessment methods and tools and explain how the data collected from these tools can be used to plan and implement phonological awareness instruction.
