Gretchen Bernabei: Using Kernel Essays to Write about Reading on the New Secondary RLA STAAR

Join writing guru, Gretchen Bernabei, for this fun and engaging session.

Since many questions in the secondary RLA classroom involve how an author’s moves make an impact on a reader, students need to become acquainted with their own independent thoughts and reactions to their reading. We need to help students learn how to generate well-formed, thorough, composed reactions to a text. Text structures can help develop this ability.

Using mentor texts, we will explore a painless and natural process to lead students to write about what they read, starting with basic responses, then analysis, and finally, answering questions. You’ll walk away feeling equipped to handle writing on the new STAAR.
