High School English New TEKS Support Series: Teaching Short Fiction and Novels

Students (and even some teachers) are often leery of high school literature because of the length of the works and the density of the language.  In spite of our best efforts to summarize the action, explain the symbols, and analyze the text, we are often greeted in our classrooms with bored and apathetic faces wondering, "Why are we reading this? This is hard."

In this virtual session, we will explore activities and exercises in a variety of learning styles to help students unlock the language of literature and bring flexibility and freshness to our own units.  We will take time to adapt the lessons to the literature we teach in our own classes, examinine critical TEKS, look at ways to help students connect with text, make connections between texts, and discern layers of meaning in text. Finally, we will look at connecting literature to writing to help students make sense of it all.

Teachers will be allotted the second part of the day for planning for next school year, generating themes, pulling resources, and developing activities and instructional strategies compatible with how the brain processes information.

The virtual room will remain open to ask questions and brainstorm or teachers may go off and work on their own.

It is recommended that participants have had an overview session of the New TEKS or have reviewed them thoroughly.
