Eureka! Again! K-2 Science Activities and Stories



This workshop and teacher materials are funded by a grant from the Bayer Fund.  Funds from the grant will be used to sponsor the presenters, the authors of Eureka! Again, K-2 Science Activities and Stories, as well as provide instructional materials for the teachers that participate in the workshop and follow-up activities.

Important Session Information:


This Eureka! Again workshop will help you add a human face to science by linking science lessons to trade-book biographies. Eureka! Again's engaging lessons are built around children’s trade-book biographies of scientists and engineers (such as Galileo and Jane Goodall). These lessons and stories (24 in each book) will help your students expand their otherwise stereotypical view of scientists (in goggles and lab coats). Book chapters: --align with Next Generation Science Standards’ Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and Cross Cutting Concepts, as well at the State of Texas TEKS; --focus on science and engineering practices; --introduce inquiry-based investigations (that highlight each scientist’s and engineer’s work and the character traits that helped each succeed); and --recommend a teaching strategy that follows the learning-cycle format. The workshop will focus on the Eureka! Again book for K-2nd grade. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the design and format of the book as a resource and get some hands-on experience with 8-10 lessons. Book chapters delve into the practices of science and engineering, such as how to ask questions and define problems, plan and conduct investigations, and analyze and interpret data. By the end of the day, you will be confidently inspired to lead literature-linked science investigations that also encourage your students to see themselves as budding scientists. **IMPORTANT NOTE: This opportunity is funded by a grant from the Bayer Foundation and, in accordance with the grant, teachers will receive the Eureka! teaching resource along with several of the literature books that will be highlighted in this workshop (valued at approximately $100). In return, teachers will be asked to complete at least two surveys, two reflections on how they are using their resources with their classes, and submit data demonstrating students growth in propensity to understand scientific concepts when using children's literature resources. All forms and response platforms will be provided to the teachers in a way that will make responding and data collection take a minimal amount of time.
