The Art of the Spiraled ELA Unit: Increasing Engagement and Fostering Connections in the High School English Classroom

Let's throw out the isolated studies: the poetry unit, the novel unit, the nonfiction unit, and the research unit. We can create units that include everything in one! In this session, we will discuss the art of spiraling fiction, nonfiction, poetry, analysis, writing, research, media, and more into one 6 week unit that fosters making connections and increases student engagement. In the morning, we will walk through the planning process and logistics of spiraling together, and along the way, we will learn fresh, engaging ways to teach all of the spiraled genres and skills. In the afternoon, we will look at writing and analysis strategies to incorporate into the spiraled unit.
