A linguistically diverse gifted/talented student is a child or youth who performs at — or shows the potential for performing at — a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and whose primary language is other than English and whose English language skills are such that the student has difficulty performing ordinary classwork in English. (TEC §29.052)
A linguistically diverse student may already be receiving services as an English learner.
Texas is a wonderfully diverse state where more than 30 languages are spoken. Approximately 34% of Texas residents speak a language other than English. Of that group, 85% speak Spanish.
