Trauma, Substance Use, and School Mental Health: A Framework for Student Support

This workshop explores the complex relationship between mental health and substance use among youth. Participants will examine common risk and protective factors that contribute to substance use and gain a deeper understanding of how mental health challenges, trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and environmental influences impact student behavior and decision-making. Through a trauma-informed lens, educators will learn evidence-based strategies and interventions to support students struggling with substance use, including approaches for individual counseling, small-group work, and school-wide prevention efforts. Participants will leave with practical tools to identify warning signs, build protective factors, and connect students to appropriate supports and resources.
