Southern Coastal Culinary Workshop for Culinary Arts Teachers

This hands-on Southern Coastal Culinary Workshop explores the rich culinary traditions of the American South’s coastal regions. Participants will learn techniques and flavor profiles rooted in Southern heritage while preparing several classic and creative dishes. The workshop focuses on ingredient-driven cooking, traditional methods, and modern presentation.
During the session, participants will prepare Truffle Shrimp and Grits, a refined take on a Southern staple that blends creamy stone-ground grits with perfectly sautéed shrimp and aromatic truffle accents. Students will also learn to make Hoppin’ John Black-Eyed Pea Cakes, transforming the traditional dish into crisp, flavorful cakes that highlight the earthy taste of black-eyed peas.
The workshop also includes a Sideboard Delights Pickling segment where participants will create Dilly Beans, learning the fundamentals of quick pickling, seasoning balance, and proper preservation techniques. To round out the menu, students will bake Carolina Rice Bread, a regional specialty that reflects the historical importance of rice in Southern coastal cuisine.
By the end of the workshop, participants will gain practical skills in Southern cooking techniques, flavor layering, pickling basics, and traditional bread preparation while celebrating the vibrant food culture of the Southern coast.
