Most districts now have 18+ programs, but many are not aligned with evidence-based practices. For example, like all areas of special education it must be individualized and cannot “one-size fits all” practices. What are some 18+ myths?
(1) All 18+ students can attend a half day.
(2) We had 36 students in our 18+ and hallelujah, four of them have paid jobs. General education would never celebrate those statistics.
(3) Students cannot attend 18+ because they are not employable.
(4) We only have one student over 18 who had met graduation requirements, so we don’t have an 18+ program.
Well, you may not have an 18+ program, but you can certainly have 18+ services. There is an answer to all of these statements and to each of the questions that typically arise in the development of 18+ programs and the continuous improvement phases of 18+ programs.
Participants will learn how to evaluate their existing 18+ program or current services in place that would facilitate starting an 18+ program.
Information will be provided to improve IEP development, 18+ instruction, alignment to employment and job results, and yes, to postsecondary education for all 18+ students.
Participants will receive numerous tools to provide and improve 18+ services for students with disabilities.
