Productive Struggle in the Mathematics Classroom
For Math Teachers Grades K-8



Engaging students in productive problem solving

Important Session Information:


Participants will explore creating a classroom environment that embraces productive struggle, empowering students to engage with challenging math tasks and build true understanding. Through collaborative activities, rich problem-solving experiences, and meaningful reflection, educators will learn how to foster a strong math identity and supportive classroom community. Attendees will also discover strategies to design and implement math tasks that encourage persistence and develop classroom routines that help students reflect on their learning process.

As a result of today's learning, participants will:

  • Experience several rich math tasks and actively engage with these tasks to explore productive struggle firsthand.
  • Learn the characteristics of productive and unproductive struggle and learn ways to support student growth.
  • Explore ways to foster math identity and community to create a classroom culture that values effort and perseverance.
  • Investigate ways to develop rich math tasks that encourage productive struggle.
  • Explore ways to establish routines that promote regular reflection on productive struggle experiences.
