Creating an Adulting 101 High School Course

This practical workshop provides FCS teachers with guidance on developing and implementing an impactful essential skills course focused on preparing students for adulthood. Educators will learn strategies for designing curriculum, lessons, and activities that teach critical skills for independent living after high school.
The workshop includes 1) Identifying essential adulting skills to cover such as financial literacy, cooking, time management, and more; 2) Incorporating role-playing, simulations, and interactive projects to engage students; 3) Developing course learning objectives and mapping skills to standards; 4) Creating collaborations with community partners and bringing in guest speakers; 4) Utilizing technology and online resources to enhance instruction; 5) Building buy-in and support from administrators, parents, and students; 6) Assessing student progress and program outcomes; and 7) Sharing best practices for making adulting skills stick. Participants will leave equipped with tangible resources and a roadmap for launching their own unique Adulting 101 course at their high school. Help prepare students for the real world by teaching them vital essential skills that set them up for success after graduation. Educators will also learn how they can combine three different FCS courses in offering this Adulting 101 course.
