College Prep Math Information Session with SPC
Fall 2024

SPC is offering a 1/2 day informational session to all schools in Region 17.

Important Session Information:

This workshop is designed for teachers, administrators, and counselors who will be providing a college prep math course to those high school students who have been identified at the end of their junior year as "not college ready".

HB 5 requires that districts identify students at the end of 11th grade who are not demonstrating college readiness. Students identified are to be offered a College Prep ELA or Math course. This course is to be developed between the local district and an institution of higher ed. Most, if not all, of our districts partner with SPC. Teachers of the course attend a one day training as per the MOU agreement to discuss alignment and college prep standards.

This course can be incorporated into an existing course or scheduled as a stand-alone. Students on the Foundation High School Programs can use these courses as 4th Math and English Courses or as electives. Students on the Min, Recommended, or Distinguished Plan can use these courses as local electives or possibly as a state elective depending on how the school has it incorporated. Students who are identified by the local district are not required to take the course, but it is required to be offered and explained to parents and students as to the benefits of the course.

More importantly, students mastering this course can meet the TSI requirement and not be required or need to take developmental education courses at the college level. The data shows that students who are required to take developmental education courses are less likely to finish a degree plan or less likely to finish in a standard amount of time.
